Meet Our Teachers & Staff

It has been said that “Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students, and enthusiastic parents with high expectations,” (Bob Beauprez). We at Queen Creek Elementary believe this wholeheartedly. Our teachers and staff work with students and their parents every day to bring about each student’s highest potential in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. They expect excellence in their academic performance as well as in their character traits. What a team! Please meet them:

“Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody."

About Me

My family and I moved to the Queen Creek area 28 years ago and have raised our children here since. I am a wife, a mother and stepmother to eight children, with two bookend girls and six boys in between, and I am a grandmother of seven grandchildren and one more on the way. I enjoy gardening, scrapbooking, outdoor activities, and spending time with my family. Being a grandparent is truly one of the best parts of life.

Educational/Professional Background

I have been with Queen Creek Unified School District for 20 years now. I started with the district as a substitute coordinator. I have had opportunities to work at most of the sites in our district until going to the middle school eight years ago to be Mrs. Niven’s secretary. In 2014, I came to QCE with Mrs. Niven and have truly enjoyed being here. What a blessing it is to work with our elementary children and our great staff.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

Although I am not a teacher by profession, I believe that we all, as parents, aunts, uncles, family, and community members, play an important role in helping children grow and become successful. Children need positive role models, encouragement, and boundaries that allow them to grow. We all have to learn at our own pace, and while learning, we will always make mistakes before we get it just right. By encouraging students to be their very best, put the mistakes behind them, and start off each day with a positive attitude, they will grow. Through life experience, I have learned that life is just way too short to sweat the small stuff!

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” -William Butler Yeats

About Me

Ms. Mariani, her husband, and son named Zachary, moved to AZ from IL in 2015. She loves health, fitness, country dancing, and spending time with family and friends.

Educational/Professional Background

Ms. Mariani is starting her first full year as attendee clerk/registrar at Queen Creek Elementary. Prior to joining the front staff, Ms. Mariani’s educational experience includes working here at QCE as a teacher’s aide in the preschool room, three years assisting at a Christian Children Center, along with two years running her own in-home day care.  Her 20 years of experience as an administrative assistant will help her handle the critical operations of the registrar’s office.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

Each child is unique and I do my best to nurture the intrinsic gifts that each one brings and shares with me. I also believe that what truly makes a difference in a child’s life, beneath all the methods, materials, and the curriculum, is a teacher who cares about each child and who teaches from the heart. Children will learn if challenged and stimulated, especially in the right environment.

"Don't give up. I believe in you all. A person's a person, no matter how small "-Dr. Seuss

About Me

Mrs. Sylvia Cruz-Torres has been married for 20 years and is the mother of three boys. She loves shopping, reading, and baking. Her favorite thing to do is to spend time with her family.

Educational/Professional Background

Mrs. Cruz-Torres received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from ASU and recently completed her master’s degree in elementary education with a reading emphasis from NAU. She holds endorsements in reading, early childhood, ESL, and middle school language arts. Mrs. Cruz-Torres began her career many years ago in the Wilson School District teaching eighth grade language arts and government but left to stay home with her growing family. Seven years ago she returned to the classroom as a preschool and prekindergarten teacher at a private Lutheran school in Gilbert. It is here that she truly gained a love and passion for early childhood education.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

My philosophy as an early childhood educator is first and foremost centered at the belief that every child can learn and has their own unique and beautiful gifts to offer. I feel that it is the responsibility of the teacher to provide an enriching and creative classroom that helps encourage students to unlock their gifts and gain a joy for lifetime learning. In my classroom I provide a play-based and child-centered environment that allows my students to learn through their own creative experiences. I strive to create a loving yet structured classroom that assists in my classroom management. This environment helps my students understand expectations so that transitions are as smooth as possible and each moment is spent learning. It is also important to have a clear understanding that each child is different, and I work towards understanding the best way to connect and motive each as individuals so each student achieves continual growth.

“If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart.”

About Me

I was born in South Bend, Indiana, but moved to Arizona when I was four, so I feel like an Arizona native. I’m the lucky mother of three daughters. I love being outside, hiking, walking, traveling, shopping, and being crafty. I enjoy watching college football (Go Irish!), spending time with friends, and especially spending time with my girls.

Educational/Professional Background

I’m going into my tenth year of teaching. My first year of teaching I taught fourth grade, and then I moved to third grade for five years. During this time I completed my master’s degree along with my reading endorsement through NAU. While my family was expanding I left teaching for 4 years and returned for one year to teach part-time at a local preschool before moving on to Queen Creek Elementary. This year is my second year at QCE preschool, and I have loved every minute.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I believe in the true love of learning and that it is a life long journey. I’m excited that I have the opportunity to contribute to a student’s joy of learning in the beginning of their educational career. I believe it is the job of a preschool teacher to teach students about life skills needed to help them grow and prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. Preschool is important as it teaches valuable skills such as sharing, interaction with others, and cognitive growth. Every child can learn, and it is the job of the teacher to help find the best tools with which to help them be successful. I try to create a classroom that is nurturing but also structured, as there needs to be rules and expectations so that students can rise to the challenge of learning. I love being a teacher because of the change and challenges each day brings. Kids are a joy to work with, they are excited and interested and eager to learn, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help foster that.

About Me

Miss Amy is originally from the great state of Washington and has lived in Arizona since 1998.

Educational/Professional Background

Miss Amy graduated from Washington State University in 1995 with a bachelor of arts in elementary and special education. She received a master of education degree in 1998 from Heritage College.

Miss Amy began teaching special education in 1995 in Sunnyside, Washington, then moved to Arizona in 1998 where she worked in the Tempe Elementary School District as an elementary resource teacher. After getting married and moving to the Ahwatukee area, Miss Amy became employed in the Kyrene School District as a resource teacher. Miss Amy has been teaching preschool in the Queen Creek Unified School District since 2006.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

Miss Amy believes that in order to prepare children for kindergarten and beyond, they must have opportunities and experiences in five major areas of early childhood development:  gross/fine motor, cognitive, language, social/emotional, and adaptive. Preschool children must be allowed and encouraged to move their bodies, use their five senses, and practice communicating with teachers and other students in order to take in all of the new information that is so exciting and educational to them in their young lives.

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out”?-Dr. Seuss

About Me

Ms. Brittany Fletcher is married and has two young children. She loves hiking, shopping, and crafting around her house. She prefers spending time with family and visiting the beach often.

Educational/Professional Background

Ms. Fletcher is going into her sixth year of teaching. She has taught five years at the elementary level and one year at the high school level. Ms. Fletcher is passionate about students learning and reaching their highest potential.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I believe that as an early childhood educator and a special educator I am responsible for providing young children with positive learning experiences. I strive to model respect, patience, and care for children and adults I come in contact with. Children have the right to have their needs met and receive the proper education while in the classroom setting. I strive to run a Love and Logic classroom and incorporate the following:

When students feel respected, appreciated, and even loved by their teachers, they are far more motivated and cause far fewer problems.
Students are far calmer and more motivated when their teachers allow them to make choices and solve their own problems within limits.
Successful educators focus most of their energy on simple tools for preventing misbehavior or keeping it small rather than trying to provide consequences for every problem.
When consequences are necessary, effective educators provide them with sincere empathy or compassion.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I believe every child can learn, and my goal is to make each child feel as special as he or she is. I want my students to be successful, to have a positive self-esteem, as well as to have a love of learning. My motto is you may have not learned it yet, but you will.

About Me

Welcome to first grade! It is so exciting to be back here at Queen Creek Elementary. It is a true homecoming for me this year. I am from Queen Creek where I attended Queen Creek Elementary and graduated from Queen Creek High School. I am grateful for the opportunity to come back and teach the community I know and love. I have one son, Easton, who is four years old and always keeps me on my toes. I have a husband, Eric, who is a firefighter/paramedic for Tucson. When I am not having fun and teaching first grade, I love to play softball and coach. I am always wrapped in a book or out on an outdoor adventure with my family.

Educational/Professional Background

My experience includes teaching first and third grade. I spent three years as a paraprofessional in the special education department at Gilbert Public Schools. I completed my student teaching in first grade and had a long-term position teaching first grade at Gilbert. I graduated from Northern Arizona University in December of 2012 with a bachelor of science in elementary education. During the 2013-2014 school year, I taught third grade at Anthem K-8 and taught first grade there the following year. I am thrilled and excited to be teaching first grade this year.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I believe in a positive approach to teaching. I love to “catch someone being good or doing their best!” I believe that communication is the key to becoming successful partners in your child’s education. My goal is to build self-esteem, teach according to your child’s needs, and encourage your child to want to be the best that he or she can be. A very important expectation for our classroom will be, “Do your best at all times and build the confidence to figure problems out.” I believe in a classroom family environment to help students feel safe and ask for assistance from their peers. I am very anxious to get to know each of your children.

I love to laugh, learn new things, and see the world! I sit on the local Queen Creek Schools Education Foundation and like to remain active in our community.

Educational/Professional Background

I graduated from NMSU with my BS in education in 2004. I did my student teaching in 5th grade in Belize, Central America. My husband was active duty in the Army, and we were stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. I taught kindergarten and second grade for the Department of Defense. We moved to Arizona in 2007. I taught 2nd grade for Apache Junction for three years. In 2009 I got my master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from GCU. I took off five years to stay at home with my kids. During that time I taught English online to Korean children in South Korea and subbed for QCUSD. In 2015 I decided it was time to get back into the classroom and began teaching 4th grade for QCES and have been loving it ever since! Go, Eagles!

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

In my classroom, I foster the idea that students should start thinking for themselves. I believe that real learning comes when the student starts to explore, and comes up with real ideas that are shared with others. Students begin to realize that there are other perspectives, and they begin to collaborate with each other. Learning how to work together is one of life’s greatest skills.

About Me

Hello! My name is Stephanie Lederman, and I am very excited to join the fourth grade team at Queen Creek Elementary this year! This is my 22nd year teaching third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. I love teaching the intermediate grades, but fourth grade is my absolute favorite. I have lived in Arizona since 1987, and I have always been fascinated by Arizona history and all the wild plants and animals of the beautiful Sonora Desert. My favorite time of year is the refreshing monsoons that replenish our life-giving water tables, lakes, and rivers.

Do you know any military veterans? Veterans have a very special place in my heart. I grew up in on Air Force bases all over the United States and in Germany. I can speak some German and Spanish, and I try to improve my language learning a little every day. My dad served his country as a C-130 pilot while my mom held down the fort at home. I am looking forward to learning more about you as the year unfolds.

Educational/Professional Background

I graduated from Tempe High School in 1990 and went on to get my BA in elementary education from Arizona State University in 1995. A few years later, I pursued my English language learning and gifted education endorsements from Arizona State University West Campus, and I found that the instructional and assessment strategies used for English and gifted learners are excellent for all types of students. Before I had my two daughters, I went back to school and achieved my masters in educational technology. I love to incorporate the use of technology into my lessons. I have taught third grade for three years, fourth grade for five years, fifth grade for five years, and sixth grade for nine years.

As a teacher, my job is to provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging classroom environment, where students can develop confidence by learning from my example that they are free to make mistakes and grow to be even more successful in the process. In fact, my motto is “The more mistakes you make, the smarter you become!” I am very passionate about finding or developing the most relevant curriculum to capture and hold a child’s interest. Integrating the subject areas helps with building up a child’s necessary basic skills to learn and work in a constantly changing world. In addition, I often present students with experiences that require critical thinking and opportunities to communicate, and I help them persist in the face of any challenges. I believe every child is unique, talented, and has the ability to reach their individual goals. It is my duty to partner with parents to help ensure my students have the most beneficial educational experience in their fourth grade year with me, especially in preparation for the next.

About Me

I am originally from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and I moved to Arizona about four years ago, after graduating college. I am thrilled to be working in Special Education in the QCUSD for another year. I enjoy watching students make progress every year. In my down time, I love working out and competing in Crossfit competitions.

Educational/Professional Background

I went to Misericordia University in Dallas, PA from 2010 to 2014. I graduated with a dual degree in Special Education/Early Childhood Education. I have taught in the QCUSD for four years. I worked at Desert Mountain Elementary School for two years as a resource teacher. This is currently my second year teaching resource classes at Queen Creek Elementary School. I have taught grade levels between kindergarten to fifth grade.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

In my classroom, I hold my students to a high expectation that meets their abilities. I want to create a positive and safe learning environment for each student. Every student learns in a different way and it is my job to make sure that their needs are being met. In my classroom, students will develop organizational, self-advocacy, and life skills. Student success is very important and I believe that every student can achieve success.

“All children need a laptop. Not a computer, but a human laptop… someone to hold them, read to them, teach them. Loved ones who will embrace them and pass on the experience, rituals, and knowledge of a hundred previous generations. Loved ones who will pass to the next generation their expectations…their hopes, and their dreams.”-Colin Powell

About Me

I am the mother of a sixteen year old son. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked with my husband for eight years at our printing and marketing firm. I am an alumnus of both U of A and ASU, but the Wildcats have my heart. In my free time, I enjoy yoga, hiking, trying new restaurants, watching U of A sporting events, posting clever observations on social media, and spending time with my family and friends.

Educational/Professional Background

In 2014, I went back to school to earn my master’s degree in education. I started teaching in January, 2015. The 2015-2016 school year is my first at QCE. I love working in the learning center classroom. Every day is an adventure!

Never let them see you sweat!

About Me

Miss Becky works in Special Education by day but works with dogs and cats in her free time. She loves training animals and her dogs and cats have been in commercials and many print ads. She spends her weekends running around an agility field with her dog. Scuba diving is a newfound passion, and she would love to spend more time underwater.

Educational/Professional Background

Miss Becky attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Teacher Education for Physical Education. She taught Adapted P.E. in Georgia before moving out of state and pursuing a different career. When she moved to Arizona, she knew she wanted to work in some capacity with Special Education and that is exactly where she is!

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I believe that children are unique and I enjoy finding the little keys that open their minds to learning. When one thing doesn't work, I try another. I'm very persistent that way!

“You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit!”

About Me

I am a mother of five, one boy and four girls. I am a grandmother of two and hoping for more in the future. I’ve lived in Queen Creek for 16 years. I am an Arizona native from Mesa. I am a proud mother of a Navy corpsman deployed with the Fleet Marines, who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving our country. I am thankful every day for brave men and women who are willing to serve our country.

I love to travel and take long drives to see the country(old lady vacations). I love animals. I use to have horses, pigs, goats, cows, chickens, and ducks until I moved from my tiny farm. Now I have two wiener dogs.

Educational/Professional Background

I have been a preschool aide at QCE since 2012, and I love it! Before that I worked in rehabilitation/habilitation working with children with special needs. My most rewarding job was being a stay at home mom while my children were young.

I grew up in North Dakota and have been living in Arizona since 1997. My husband Mark also works for QCUSD.  I love to do jigsaw puzzles, and I am an avid hockey fan.

Educational/Professional Background

This is my 20th year as a speech language pathologist, and my 18th year in QCUSD. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota and my master’s degree from St. Cloud State University.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

All students develop a mode of communication, whether it be verbal, or non-verbal, such as signing or using  assistive technology. The ability to communicate is essential to every child’s ability to learn, socialize with others, and to fulfill their potential.

About Me

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to our ELP class. My family and I moved to Queen Creek seventeen years ago. I have been teaching here in Queen Creek for the past sixteen years. My wife, Darla, is also an elementary school teacher and will be the data and math specialist here at QCE this year. We have three children: Adam 17, Brielle 15, and Elyas 11. Adam and Brielle are at QCHS, and Eli is at Newell Barney. My hobbies include fishing, cooking, and woodworking.

Educational/Professional Background

After completing my BA in elementary education from ASU and then Ottawa University. I pursued my master’s degree from NAU in elementary education. I graduated in 2004 and then began my coursework in gifted education at ASU. Finally, after many grueling years, I finished my doctorate in leadership and teacher training at Grand Canyon University in 2013.

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I am a firm believer in a pragmatic approach to education. The process of how to learn can be just as important as what to learn. Students need the opportunity to feel safe in attempting new challenges. I believe that it is not failure until one quits. “I haven’t failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” - Thomas Edison.

When I am not at work, you can find me playing with my nephew, hanging out with my family and friends, working out, or attending all the Arizona Cardinals games! Go big Red!

Educational/Professional Background

Educational and School Counseling Philosophy

I absolutely love teaching and coaching! My classroom is a fun, yet structured, learning environment. I am a firm believer in respect, teamwork, and hard work. I hope to teach my students the importance of a healthy lifestyle through developmental sports and health education. I hope to instill in my students the importance of being physically active in a manner that will increase their physical competence, self?esteem, and an enjoyment of many physical activities. The physical education curriculum will include a balance of individual skills, health concepts, and game activities. These activities are designed to enhance the cognitive, motor, and physical fitness development of every student. As a physical educator, I want to take on the challenge of motivating my students to develop a healthy lifestyle and to demonstrate to them how much fun physical activity can be both individually or shared with their peers.
